About this project

The University of Oregon embarked on a campaign to engage with travelers visiting Eugene for the homecoming football game. Together with my colleagues at Allen Hall Advertising, we created a mixed-reality experience that promoted achievements of the universities alumni.

My role: Technical Lead, Designer

Tools: Microsoft Kinect, Windows, Photoshop

The problem

Travelers at the airport breeze past print advertisements. The average engagement time is ~15 seconds. Advertising space is limited to pre-built display cases. Airport advertising fails to target specific audiences.

The solution

Build an interactive display that educates and excites. Utilize motion sensing technology to enable interactivity. Tell stories about the amazing accomplishments of University of Oregon alumni.

Concept

With the goal of motion capture in mind, we planned to use a Windows computer with a Microsoft Kinect sensor, and provision software to display the content. We partnered with nsquared solutions to develop a program that would serve as the user interface. Then, we researched key historical moments and designed the content for the display.

Execution

After finalizing the interactivity and the content, we built the display in the airport and tested to ensure it functioned as expected. We then interacted with travelers to get their feedback on the experience.

Retrospective

I take pride in this project because of its ambitious nature. The advertisement successfully captivated travelers and met our client's expectations.  The physical limitations of the airport display case presented substantial hurdles in achieving our desired functionality. With no opportunity to assess the case before installation, we were forced to engage in extensive troubleshooting and make compromises to deliver the final product. My biggest takeaway from this project is the importance of testing. As we developed, we eventually reached a point where we deemed the project to be done, without considering the significant effort of performing the installation and the testing that it functioned properly.  In retrospect, I would have created an extensive test plan beforehand, and communicated this to both the client and the airport staff that this must be the basis for delivering a high quality product.
